Trichomoniasis

What it is

Trichomoniasis (try-co-mo-nee-a-sis) is an uncommon infection. It’s called trich for short, which is said like ‘trike’. It affects the vagina and the opening at the end of the penis (urethra).

How it happens

Trich is passed through genital fluids.

It can happen from:

• vaginal sex
• sharing sex toys

Protect your body

• Use a condom. If you’re using a toy, use a fresh condom every time you swap with your partner.
• Avoid genital fluids when touching each other. That includes the vagina and penis.

Take the test

If you have symptoms, a doctor will check for trich. For the test, you’ll give the doctor a sample of your wee or a swab from your vagina. And remember to get tested every 6 to 12 months for other STIs. Testing is a normal part of being healthy.

Treat it

You can cure trich with antibiotics. 

If you have it: 

• Tell people you’re having sex with so they can do a test and take antibiotics so they don’t get it again.

Avoid sex until 7 days after you and your sex partner(s) finished your medicine.
